Description
Released in 2019, the C7 Apex was produced to mark the fifth anniversary of Calibre SH21, Christopher Ward’s first commercially viable in‑house movement. Rather than introducing a new complication or variation, the Apex focused on how the movement itself was presented, using the C7 case as a platform to expose and highlight the SH21 architecture.
The defining feature of the C7 Apex is its open‑worked, architectural dial. Instead of conventional skeletonisation, the movement is layered and structured, revealing the twin barrels, gear train and key mechanical elements in a way that feels deliberate rather than decorative. Colour accents are used sparingly to guide the eye across the mechanics, giving the dial depth and a sense of motion while retaining clarity. This approach was developed in collaboration with Armin Strom, the independent Swiss atelier known for its work in open‑worked movement architecture, and their influence is evident in the balance between exposure and legibility.
What the C7 Apex demonstrated was a shift in confidence. It showed that SH21 was not only a technical achievement, but a piece of engineering worth displaying as a design object in its own right. In doing so, it laid the groundwork for the later C60 Apex and marked the moment Christopher Ward moved from simply making an in‑house movement to being comfortable celebrating it openly. The C7 Apex remains a key reference point in that transition and one of the clearest expressions of the SH21 story.
