Quick facts

Description

Power reserve watches have always appealed to a particular kind of watch owner (like me!). Unlike complications that exist primarily to be admired, a power reserve is practical and quietly reassuring, offering a direct relationship between the wearer and the movement beneath the dial. It tells you not just the time, but how much energy remains, and in doing so makes the mechanics of the watch part of the daily experience.

The C1 Grand Malvern Power Reserve presents this idea in a deliberately classical form. Launched in October 2016, it was the first model to sit within the C1 range of premium dress watches and set the tone for what that collection would become. The dial is clean and symmetrical, with the power reserve indicator placed at nine o’clock and nothing else competing for attention. At 40.5mm, the case has presence without excess, and the overall design reflects the Malvern line’s traditional leanings rather than modern minimalism. Even the name, “Grand Malvern”, was chosen by the Christopher Ward Forum, reinforcing the sense that this was a watch shaped as much by enthusiasts as by the brand itself.

Beneath the surface sits the SH21/8PRZ calibre, an automatic in‑house movement offering a full 120 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Visible through a sapphire case back, it represents one of Christopher Ward’s most technically ambitious movements of the period and places the power reserve indication at the centre of the watch’s purpose rather than treating it as an afterthought. The Grand Malvern Power Reserve was voted Forum Watch of the Year in 2016, recognition not just of its specification, but of the moment it marked: the beginning of the C1 range and a confident step forward in CW’s in‑house mechanical story.
