Description
Released in September 2019, the C60 Apex was the second model in Christopher Ward’s Apex series, following the earlier C7 Apex. It was created to mark the fifth anniversary of Calibre SH21, the brand’s first commercially viable in‑house movement and a significant milestone in modern British watchmaking. Limited to 100 pieces, the Apex represented a clear change in approach: rather than hiding the five‑day movement behind a dial, CW chose to make it the centrepiece of the watch. The Apex range marked the point at which Christopher Ward stopped concealing SH21 and started celebrating it.
The semi‑skeletonised dial is deliberately architectural, opening up the watch to reveal the twin barrels, gear train and key structural elements of the movement in motion. Colour accents guide the eye across the mechanics, giving the dial a sense of depth and activity while retaining legibility. This focus on structure and clarity was reinforced by the use of an exhibition case back, the first time CW had included one on a dive watch. What made the Apex particularly convincing was the collaboration behind it. CW worked with Armin Strom, one of Switzerland’s respected independent ateliers known for open‑worked movement architecture. That influence is evident in the way the Apex avoids skeletonisation for its own sake, instead presenting the movement as a coherent, layered design.
Despite this visual openness, the watch retains a 300‑metre water‑resistance rating, underlining that it remains a functional dive watch rather than a purely conceptual piece. In doing so, the C60 Apex demonstrated something important: SH21 was not just a technical achievement, but a movement worth showing, and a moment when CW’s confidence in its own engineering became visible.
