Description
Christopher Ward has a long history of making aviation-inspired watches, starting with 2006’s C5 Malvern Aviator, which was based on CW’s first ever watch, the C5 Malvern. Their next aviator was… the C8, in its first iteration which was the Pilot Mk1 of 2008. While the C9, C10 and C11 have all offered aviation models, it’s the C8 case which has proved to be CW’s go to aviator case, having been used in over ten different models over the years including the C8 Power Reserve and Al Deere special, which both sit near the top of the CW pricing scale.
The C8 Power Reserve was the first aviation‑style watch to be fitted with Christopher Ward’s SH21 movement, using the hand‑wound version with small seconds and power reserve sub‑dials. As with all SH21‑powered watches, it is COSC‑certified as a chronometer. At 44mm it is a large watch, but the absence of an automatic rotor keeps the case height to around 11mm, allowing it to sit more comfortably on the wrist than the dimensions suggest. The hand‑wound layout also provides an uninterrupted view of the SH21 through the large exhibition case back. Launched in August 2016 and officially retired in 2019, most examples date from that period, although a small number surfaced in 2020 and 2021. The watch offered here is one of the latest, dated January 2021, and is finished in DLC.
