Description
Christopher Ward first dipped a toe into the stealth-watch world in January 2016 with the launch of the Mk2 C60 Titanium Version 1. That model was retired in 2019 when the C60 Mk3 arrived, but sales must have been healthy because CW followed it up with its first ever Abyssmodel in the 2019 range. The GMT version arrived a year later, whilst the watch offered here was the range-topping C60 Abyss SH21, launched in October 2020. Featuring Christopher Ward's in-house five-day SH21 movement and limited production, it represented the most ambitious interpretation of the Abyss concept. Based on user-provided product information.
What makes the SH21 different is the dial. Rather than hiding the movement behind a black dial, Christopher Ward used a 0.6mm smoked sapphire dial that allows you to see deep into the calibre beneath. It's a clever piece of design because it manages to remain true to the stealth aesthetic whilst simultaneously showing off one of the watch's most interesting features. The power reserve indicator at 9 o'clock and the laser-cut date wheel at 3 o'clock emerge from the darkness as your eye adjusts, giving the watch far more depth than photographs suggest.
Despite the more technical execution, Christopher Ward resisted the temptation to make the watch feel busy. The monochrome colour scheme remains intact, the details are subdued and the overall character is still unmistakably Abyss. It just happens to have considerably more going on beneath the surface.
Is it easy to tell the time at a glance? No, not especially. Is the lume its strongest feature? Probably not. But that's missing the point. The Abyss was never designed to be the practical choice. It was designed to be the cool one. Add a five-day COSC-certified chronometer movement and a smoked sapphire dial into the mix and it becomes one of the most interesting modern Christopher Wards ever produced.
