Quick facts

Description

The C1 Grand Malvern Worldtimer occupies a slightly unusual place in Christopher Ward's history. While much of the catalogue has traditionally focused on divers, pilot's watches and straightforward everyday sports watches, the Worldtimer was a genuine complication piece. First introduced in the C9 range, the concept returned in 2018 as part of the Grand Malvern collection, bringing one of the most sophisticated movements Christopher Ward had ever offered to a more contemporary platform.

At its heart is the JJ03 calibre, developed by renowned watchmaker Johannes Jahnke. Originally designed for the C9 World Timer, the movement required substantial reworking for the Grand Malvern. The original 24-hour dial was replaced by a conventional 12-hour display, while a rotating 24-hour GMT ring was moved around the perimeter of the dial alongside a world cities ring and a world map display.

The result is a genuine world timer rather than simply a GMT watch. The selected time zone is shown using orange segments on the map, while the city ring and rotating 24-hour scale allow world time to be read at a glance. There is a surprising amount of information on display, yet the layout remains logical and intuitive once you understand the system.

Owing to the complexity of the movement and display, Christopher Ward housed the watch in a substantial 43.5mm case. The larger dimensions give the intricate dial room to breathe and help preserve legibility. Unlike many world timers that feel busy or overly technical, the Grand Malvern strikes a sensible balance between functionality and clarity.

Christopher Ward has produced plenty of excellent watches over the years, but relatively few genuinely complicated ones. The C1 Grand Malvern Worldtimer belongs firmly in that second category. It's an ambitious watch built around an unusual movement and remains one of the most technically interesting pieces the brand has produced.
