Description
The C65 Classic range sits just before the C65 range properly took shape. It used the 43mm case from the earlier C60 Mk1 and Mk2 era, but removes the bezel entirely. Instead of pushing further into dive watch territory, it takes a step back and simplifies things. That one change does most of the work. Without the bezel, the dial opens up and the watch feels less like a diver and more like a straightforward sports/dress watch.
Introduced in May 2016, the C65 Trident Classic Vintage Automatic applied the same idea to a smaller platform. Rather than using the 43mm Trident case, it was based on the equivalent 38mm Trident case, again dispensing with the bezel entirely and allowing the dial to become the focus. The watch also introduced Old Radium lume to the hands and indices, alongside the v.3 logo positioned at 9 o'clock.
The reduction in size makes a significant difference. The bezel-free 43mm Classic Limited Edition can wear surprisingly large thanks to its expansive dial opening, whereas the 38mm Vintage Automatic feels much better proportioned for smaller and medium-sized wrists. It retains the same clean, uncluttered aesthetic, but in a package that is easier to wear and arguably more versatile.
Looking back, the Vintage Automatic feels like a forerunner to the Sealander range. The emphasis is no longer on dive-watch capability but on balanced proportions, everyday wearability and clean design. The modern Sealander would take those ideas further, but many of the principles that define it today can already be seen here.
