Description
With the exception of a handful of military specials, the Christopher Ward C7 (and C70) range has always been home to the brand’s sport and motorsport‑inspired watches. The C7 Rapide first appeared in 2008 as a quartz chronograph and evolved through a Mk2 update in 2012, but it was the full redesign in 2017 that finally gave the C7 a clear identity of its own.
The C7 Rapide Automatic was introduced as part of that 2017 relaunch and formed a core part of the range from the outset. It used the newly developed Rapide case design, with scalloped lugs, polished edges and a contrasting black ring around the case. The dial followed the same design language, with applied indices and subtle texture adding depth without clutter, giving the watch a purposeful, well‑resolved appearance. Power comes from a Swiss automatic movement chosen for reliability and ease of ownership rather than novelty. The proportions work well, the layout is balanced and the case design does most of the work. Nothing feels forced or overdone, and the watch reflects a point where Christopher Ward’s motorsport designs had settled into something coherent and well judged.
I have always thought the C7 Rapide Automatic is an underrated part of the range and did not get the reception that it deserved. It has real presence on the wrist and the dial and case details are superb. It did not remain in the catalogue for long and prices are relatively modest for the quality of finish.
