Quick facts

Description

For a long time, Christopher Ward didn’t really have a proper everyday automatic. There were strong divers and some interesting one‑offs, but nothing that fully nailed the idea of a watch you could put on every morning without thinking about it. When the Sealander arrived in April 2021, that changed. The 39mm size is spot on for most wrists and the case wears slimmer than you’d expect. It feels well made without feeling precious, and the design is clean without ever being dull. It works just as well on a bracelet as it does on a strap and doesn’t feel out of place in any setting. If someone asked me to recommend a first automatic for daily wear, this would probably be it.

This particular watch is a limited-edition collaboration between Christopher Ward and WatchGecko, limited to just 100 individually numbered pieces. Based on the Sealander GMT 39mm, it features a unique black fumé dial that graduates from a lighter centre to deep black at the edges, alongside subtle orange accents on the GMT and seconds hands. The standard steel bezel is replaced by a fixed black DLC-coated 24-hour bezel, giving the watch a more understated, tool-watch character. Aside from discreet collaboration branding on the edge of the exhibition caseback, the watch remains faithful to the standard Sealander formula, retaining the same proportions, practicality and everyday wearability that have made it one of Christopher Ward's most popular models.

As WatchGecko is predominantly a strap company, it’s unsurprising that straps beautifully complement the watch. There are three WatchGecko strap: a black and orange nylon strap, and two elasticated Octopod straps. The result is a watch that not only stands apart visually from the standard Sealander GMT, but also lends itself particularly well to strap changes and everyday versatility.
