Description
Jumping hour watches sit slightly apart from most complications. They are neither decorative nor obviously practical in the way a chronograph or power reserve is. Instead, they challenge the most basic expectation of a watch: that the hour hand should move continuously. By replacing it with a numeral that advances in a single, precise step, the jumping hour turns timekeeping into something more deliberate and more mechanical. It is a complication that feels clever rather than showy and one that rewards attention.
The C1 Jump Hour Mk V brings this idea into Christopher Ward’s most refined dress‑watch case. Introduced in November 2025, the C1 Jump Hour Mk V is the fifth model to use the JJ01 movement first developed in 2011. Originally created by Johannes Jahnke for the C9 range, the movement is presented here with a translucent sapphire dial ring printed with minute markers and five‑minute graduations. This allows the lumed hour wheel beneath to charge fully. The hour is displayed through an aperture at twelve o’clock, while the arched minute hand is formed from lumed sapphire to maintain transparency above the hour window.
As before, the dial remains disciplined and uncluttered, with no seconds display to distract from the complication itself. The layout looks unconventional at first glance, but becomes intuitive very quickly in daily use. At the top of each hour the numeral advances instantly, accompanied by a crisp mechanical click that makes the passage of time tangible. The Mk V forms part of the Atelier Collection, announced alongside its release, and is the first new model to be included within it.
