Description
Christopher Ward first dipped a toe into the stealth‑watch world in January 2016 with the launch of the Mk2 C60 Titanium Version 1. That model was retired in 2019 when the C60 Mk3 arrived, but sales must have been healthy because CW followed it up with its first ever Abyss model in the 2019 range. The GMT version arrived a year later, followed by the range-topping SH21 model, but it was the standard Abyss that established the formula.
The idea was simple enough: take the familiar C60 and remove as much visual noise as possible. Bright colours, polished surfaces and obvious contrast all disappeared in favour of a monochrome palette of blacks and greys. Done badly, that sort of thing can feel gimmicky. Done well, it creates a watch with a very different character to the standard model.
Some watches photograph well and look much the same on the wrist. That isn't really the case here. The Abyss has a very different feel in person, with the black dial and bezel giving it a much more understated character than a standard C60.
What sells it for me is the simplicity. Christopher Ward resisted the temptation to overcomplicate the idea. It's just a well-executed brooding stealth watch, and all the better for it.
Is it the most legible watch in the C60 range? No. Is the lume its strongest feature? Probably not. But that's missing the point. The Abyss was never designed to be the sensible dive choice. It was designed to be the cool one. And more than any other Christopher Ward, it absolutely knows it.
