Description
The C65 range only really came into focus as its own line in 2018. Earlier use of the name had been applied to variations of the C60 rather than a distinct family, but that changed with the release of the C65 Trident Diver, which marked Christopher Ward’s first deliberate move into retro‑inspired tool watches. It also introduced the Light‑Catcher case to the dive line, bringing more sculpted case geometry than anything CW had produced previously. From that point, the C65 expanded steadily into military, field and vintage‑themed models, establishing itself as a parallel platform to the C60 rather than a derivative.
Introduced in August 2019 and named after the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Berkshire, the C65 Sandhurst draws directly from the Smiths W10, a 35 mm watch issued to the British Army from 1967. While the Sandhurst measures 38 mm, reflecting modern sizing, the core design remains faithful to the original. The dial layout is simple and highly legible, with Arabic numerals, minimal text and a clear field‑watch structure. The use of the Light‑Catcher case and the broader C65 design language ties it back to the rest of the range, resulting in a watch that sits between historical reference and contemporary execution.
This particular version is a limited edition developed for the Royal Marines Commandos, with just 50 pieces produced in 2022. Unlike the standard Sandhurst, the military link is not understated. The Royal Marines Commando crest is printed prominently on the dial, with “ROYAL MARINES” beneath the Christopher Ward name, so the association is obvious from the outset. The caseback reinforces it further. It’s a commissioned piece rather than a subtle variation.
