Description
In 2008, Christopher Ward introduced the C8 Pilot Mk1, and with it a case design that would go on to underpin some of the brand’s most distinctive aviation watches. At 44mm, the C8 remains the largest case CW has ever produced. On paper that sounds enormous, but the reality has always been more nuanced. It’s still too large for me and my fairly modest wrists, but thanks to its relatively slim profile — just 9.7mm thick in Mk2 form — the C8 has never worn like CW’s biggest watch. In fact, a 42mm C60 at 15mm thick feels noticeably larger on the wrist than a 44mm C8 under 10mm. The C8 is wide rather than tall, and that difference in proportion is what makes it work better than the numbers suggest.
The C8 Pilot Mk2 retained the core design, dimensions and automatic movement of the Mk1. The 44mm case and slim profile were carried over, as were the large dial opening, oversized crown and emphasis on legibility. Changes introduced with the Mk2 aligned the C8 with updates seen elsewhere in the CW range at the time, including revised branding and minor finishing adjustments. No changes were made to the layout, complication set or overall architecture. The Mk2 therefore represents a continuation of the original C8 Pilot specification rather than a redesign, consolidating the model within Christopher Ward’s aviation catalogue during the early 2010s.
