Description
The C12 Loco is Christopher Ward’s most recent Atelier output, but the thinking behind it predates the label itself. Long before Atelier was formalised, CW had a habit of testing ideas that went beyond mainstream sports and dress watches, experimenting with movement architecture and case construction in ways that signalled broader ambition. Loco belongs to that lineage. It takes confidence gained from Bel Canto and redirects it away from chiming complications towards something more visual and mechanical, making the movement itself the point rather than something hidden beneath a dial.
Instead of sound, the focus is on motion. The CW‑003 is a manually wound calibre with a 144‑hour power reserve and a front‑facing free‑sprung balance, fully exposed and gently animated as you wear the watch. The open dial is layered and architectural without feeling cluttered, with bridges stepping neatly around the balance and finishing that is clean rather than demonstrative. The 41mm integrated case reinforces that intent. The bracelet flows directly from the mid‑case, the ergonomics are noticeably more refined than earlier CW sports designs and the watch sits comfortably despite the visual complexity. It feels modern, considered and slightly playful — not a statement piece in the traditional sense, but a watch that rewards repeated, casual glances rather than demanding attention.
The name Loco reportedly reflects both the reaction to the idea — that CW must be mad to attempt it — and the locomotive‑like focus on visible motion that drives the watch forward.
