Description
The C7 Rapide Mk1 Chronograph marked Christopher Ward’s first fully developed step into motorsport‑inspired watches. Introduced in August 2008, it arrived at a point when the brand was still experimenting with form and identity, before its ranges had properly settled into long‑term families. The C7 name itself was new, and the Rapide established a template that combined automotive references with a conventional round case and accessible pricing. Unlike later C7 iterations, the Mk1 sat closer to the Malvern‑era design language, prioritising clarity and restraint over sculptural complexity.
In practical terms, the Mk1 Rapide is a 42 mm tri‑compax quartz chronograph, powered by the ETA 251.272. The dial layout places chronograph minutes at 10 o’clock, elapsed tenths at 2, and running seconds at 6, with a date window at 4 o’clock. Water resistance is rated at 50 metres, and the case profile remains relatively slim at just over 10 mm, helping it wear flatter than the dimensions suggest. Produced in multiple dial colours and finishes, the Mk1 Rapide laid the groundwork for the more ambitious Mk2 and Mk3 redesigns that followed, while remaining firmly rooted in Christopher Ward’s early approach to everyday chronographs.
