Quick facts

Description

The Malvern line sits right at the start of Christopher Ward’s story. When the brand launched in 2005, the C5 Malvern Automatic was one of just two models offered, establishing a design language rooted in classic proportions. For years, Malvern‑named watches provided the dress‑watch counterbalance to CW’s growing dive and aviation ranges. As the catalogue expanded and tooling became more ambitious, the Malvern line gradually moved towards thinner, lighter cases, culminating in the C5 Malvern 595, which pushed that trajectory further than anything before or since.

I never quite appreciated how unusual the Malvern 595 was until I handled one properly. At 5.95mm thick, it remains the slimmest watch Christopher Ward has produced, comfortably undercutting the earlier C5 Slimline Square at 8.25mm and even the recent Twelve 660. The difference is immediately apparent in the metal — you could almost stack three 595s together and end up at roughly the height of a C11 Titanium Extreme. At 39mm in diameter, it wears lightly and deliberately, with proportions that favour understatement rather than presence. This example’s cool grey dial suits the watch particularly well, a contemporary take. Launched in January 2018 and retired at the end of 2019, with remaining stock sold in early 2020, the Malvern 595 was surprisingly short‑lived and now stands as an archive outlier rather than a stepping stone in the modern CW range.
