WH1665G C60 Trident Mk3 Pro 600 40mm Prototype Sunrise (07/2021)

Quick facts

Description

Christopher Ward has a long history of pushing at the edges of what is expected at its price point, whether through unconventional design choices or quiet technical ambition. The C60 Sapphire sits squarely in that tradition. Launched in April 2020 and based on the then‑new 40mm Mk3 C60 Trident Pro, it used a fully transparent sapphire dial and caseback to expose the Sellita automatic movement beneath. Producing that dial required a complex manufacturing process, resulting in a material that is extremely thin, scratch‑resistant and visually distinctive. It wasn’t a new complication or a reinvention of the Trident, but a willingness to do something more difficult than strictly necessary and see if it worked.

This orange sapphire prototype is based on the Mk3 40mm C60 Sapphire, and only two or three were sold in July 2021. In seems like a trial run for an idea that CW would later return to in a revised form with the Sunrise. As with the Sapphire models that followed, the dial uses sapphire to create depth rather than decoration. The orange is stronger and more direct than the Sunrise palette, but the principle is the same: light passes through the dial, shifts with angle, and gives the watch a sense of movement that a flat surface never could.

Oh and if that wasn’t enough - it’s full lume (albeit you need an uv torch to really make it glow).
