Quick facts

Description

The C65 only really came into focus as a coherent range in 2018. Earlier uses of the name were essentially variations on the C60, sharing cases and architecture and never quite standing on their own. That changed with the release of the C65 Trident Diver, which marked Christopher Ward’s first deliberate move into the retro dive space and the point at which the C65 became a platform rather than a side note. It was also the first diver to use the Light‑catcher case, bringing a more sculpted, fluid profile to a category that had previously been more utilitarian in CW’s lineup. From there, the C65 quickly expanded into a broader family — covering vintage divers, military styles and more experimental offshoots — and in the process began to rival the C60 as the brand’s defining dive watch.

Launched in March 2021, the C65 AM GT VEV series, comprising the AM 1 and AM 2, was conceived as a paired limited release, with each version drawing on the visual language of the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato rather than any form of co‑branding. Together they each formed a 150‑piece run, and were framed by Christopher Ward as a fitting conclusion to the brand’s long‑running investment in super‑accurate quartz chronographs. The emphasis was on precision and usability: a thermo‑compensated high‑accuracy movement, a tenths‑of‑a‑second chronograph, central chronograph seconds, a 30‑minute counter, running seconds and an independently adjustable hour hand that made the watch genuinely practical for everyday wear.

The distinction between AM 1 and AM 2 was one of execution rather than intent, with both serving the same underlying idea: applying motorsport‑inspired instrumentation to the well established C65 platform without overwhelming it. Late production examples used an updated version of the calibre to complete the run, a minor technical footnote that does little to change the character of the watches. They were positioned as a closing chapter, although the later arrival of the C63 Valour suggested that CW was not entirely finished with high‑accuracy quartz after all. .
