Description
Moonphase watches have a long and distinguished history. Long before they became decorative complications, they were practical tools, one of the clearest ways of tracking the passage of months by following the lunar cycle. The complication has always sat at the intersection of science and romance, useful as well as beautiful.
The dial is the hook. The one‑of‑a‑kind aventurine looks like a clear night sky caught under glass, with copper flecks suspended at different depths so it shimmers rather than sparkles. CW had the restraint to leave it alone. No indices, no logo, nothing to interrupt the view. Aventurine itself was discovered by accident on Murano in the 17th century, its name literally meaning “by chance”, and that sense of happy unpredictability still carries through. Every dial is different, and that is exactly the point.
Then comes the discipline underneath. A halo model, the JJ04 calibre is one of the most mathematically precise and technically accomplished complications Christopher Ward has produced, replacing the usual crude moonphase gearing with a far more accurate solution. Set correctly and kept running, the display will be accurate to one day every 128 years. It is a quietly obsessive piece of engineering hiding beneath something openly romantic, and the contrast between the two is what makes the C1 Moonphase 40 so compelling.
