Description
In 2008, Christopher Ward introduced the C8 Pilot Mk1, and with it a case design that would go on to underpin some of the brand’s most distinctive aviation watches. At 44mm, the C8 remains the largest case CW has ever produced. On paper that sounds enormous, but the reality has always been more nuanced. It’s still too large for me and my fairly modest wrists, but thanks to its relatively slim profile — just 9.7mm thick in Mk2 form — the C8 has never worn like CW’s biggest watch. In fact, a 42mm C60 at 15mm thick feels noticeably larger on the wrist than a 44mm C8 under 10mm. The C8 is wide rather than tall, and that difference in proportion is what makes it work better than the numbers suggest.
Introduced in August 2015, the C8 Flyer was offered in both 38mm and 44mm sizes and drew directly on Britain’s aviation history. The design is inspired by the Smiths cockpit clock used in Spitfire aircraft, with an emphasis on clarity and instrument style legibility. This example is the 44mm quartz version, which keeps the dial layout simple and dependable. The quartz movement reinforces the idea of the Flyer as a practical aviation watch rather than a showcase piece, making full use of the slim C8 case and its wide, flat proportions. It is the most straightforward expression of the C8 family, focused on ease of use and clear time reading above all else.
