Description
In 2014, Christopher Ward launched Calibre SH21, its first modern in‑house automatic movement and a significant technical step for a young independent brand. Designed from scratch by Johannes Jahnke at Synergies Horlogères, SH21 was built to chronometer standards and engineered around a twin barrel architecture delivering a 120‑hour power reserve. The movement was conceived as modular and robust rather than decorative, intended for daily wear across multiple watch families rather than as a one‑off statement. Its introduction marked a clear change in how CW positioned itself within the wider watch industry.
The C9 Harrison 43mm was the initial and primary platform for SH21 and became the watch most closely associated with that moment. The large case provided the space required for the movement and established the standard format that later SH21 models would follow. The design was deliberately restrained, with a thin bezel, balanced dial layout and minimal surface detail, allowing the focus to remain on the calibre rather than the case. Since 2014, SH21 has appeared across dress, field and sports watches including various C60 and C65 models, but the C9 Harrison remains the clearest expression of CW’s move into true in‑house mechanical watchmaking and the point at which the brand began designing watches from the movement outward rather than the other way round.
