Description

The Speedhawk, introduced in 2009 as the C40, was Christopher Ward’s first automatic chronograph and a major step forward for the brand. Developed from the earlier C4 Peregrine, it is a 42mm motorsport‑themed chronograph powered by the ETA 7750, with a day‑date display but without the alarm complication found on some C4 variants. The layout is traditional and functional, with clear sub dials and a rotating bezel supported by an internal tachymeter. The counterbalance on the chronograph seconds hand takes the form of a peregrine falcon, a detail that tied the watch back to its aviation‑influenced roots.

In its time, the Speedhawk sat at the top of CW’s motorsport range. Its size and thickness were unapologetic, reflecting both the movement inside and the tool‑watch intent of the design. In a 2011 retrospective vote, the Speedhawk was named CWL Forum Watch of the Year for 2009, underlining its impact at the time. Retired in 2012, it now reads as a bold early statement piece: less refined than later chronographs but significant as the watch that proved CW could execute a complex automatic tool watch with confidence.
