Description
The C65 range only really came into focus in 2018. Earlier uses of the name were essentially variations on the C60 and never quite stood on their own. That changed with the release of the C65 Trident Diver, which marked CW’s first deliberate move into the retro dive space and the point at which the C65 became a platform rather than a side note. This was also the first diver to use the Light‑catcher case, bringing a more sculpted and fluid profile to a category that had previously been more utilitarian in CW’s lineup. From there the C65 quickly expanded into a broader family, covering vintage divers, military styles and more experimental offshoots, and in the process began to rival the C60 as the brand’s defining dive watch.
The C65 Chronograph was launched in October 2020 and promptly decided that restraint was optional. Nicknamed “Wild Thing”, it leans heavily into late‑1960s yachting chronographs, with a bright blue dial and red, blue and orange accents that would look right at home on the deck of something expensive and impractical. The colour‑coded 30‑minute counter follows classic regatta design cues, while additional timing options arrive in the form of a unidirectional dive bezel and a tachymeter around the edge, because if you are going to overdo it, you may as well commit properly.
Power comes from the Valjoux‑architecture automatic chronograph movement that has powered an alarming number of watches over the years, here in Sellita SW510 form. It is big, it is tall and it makes no apologies for either, which explains the C65 Chrono’s noticeable thickness. That said, the 41mm Light‑catcher case does a good job of hugging the wrist and on my 6.75‑inch wrist it works far better than the numbers suggest.
In the words of The Troggs, perhaps not what they had in mind, but I’ll run with it…
“Wild thing, you make my heart sing
You make everything groovy, wild thing
Wild thing, I think I love you
But I wanna know for sure”
The C65 Chronograph was retired in December 2023 and remains one of the boldest watches that CW has ever produced - I don’t like chronographs as a rule (preferring simple three handers), but this is one of my favourites.
