Description
The C11 range arrived in 2011, at a point when Christopher Ward was still experimenting with what its technical sports watches should be. The Trident already existed, having been introduced a couple of years earlier, but it had not yet become the brand’s defining line. That left space for the C11 to explore more specialised territory, leaning harder into aviation and professional dive-watch concepts. The C11 models were more complex, more technical and more assertive than the Tridents of the time, and they played an important role in shaping CW’s reputation for specification-led watches during its first decade.
The C11 Makaira Pro 500 arrived in August 2012 and was the dive watch of the range. Its defining feature was the internal rotating bezel, operated by the upper crown, which gave the watch a noticeably different feel to the Tridents that sat alongside it. It sold steadily rather than spectacularly and by 2015 the remaining stock had been cleared. Since then, good examples have become increasingly difficult to find.
The dial layout is straightforward and highly legible, with the internal bezel doing much of the work visually. This example is fitted with the orange markers, one of the less common colour options.
What I like about the Makaira is that it feels like Christopher Ward trying something different. The internal bezel, twin-crown case and overall design give it a very different personality to both the Tridents that came before it and the C65 range that followed.
The C11 line eventually disappeared as Christopher Ward simplified the catalogue, but the Makaira remains one of the more distinctive watches from that period and a reminder of how experimental the brand could be in its early years.
